I had just expressed my reservations about O’Brian White out loud at the game on Saturday when the above happened. I finished my sentence and less than a minute later he scored this excellent header. My point was that while he was working hard creating space and good opportunities, he was having trouble finishing. Nothing like being proved wrong, with a vengeance.
And I certainly wasn’t the only one proved wrong. On the Seattle Times Sounders’ blog last week all talk seemed to be about finding a new forward, from the General Manager and coaches all the way down to the supporters. Rumors were flowing about possible new signings and one in particular. As with Diego Forlán earlier in the year, while it seemed a bit unlikely, it was nice to imagine the Sounders signing the best comic footballer in history, even if he would be well over 50 at this point.
And here is that excellent Steve Zakuani goal, connecting well with OBW in a one-two (“give and go”). And Kasey Keller may be knocking on a bit, that lush mullet long gone, but what an amazing display. No way Zak would have scored that goal against Keller on Saturday, fabulous as it was.
