Get Directions from Google maps and Seattle’s Columbia City neighborhood is just 10 to 12 miles from Ballard, depending on the route. I have to say it feels much further. But Columbia City is a cool place and you can’t always chose where your friends live. Take Rainier Ave, the scenic route. Make a day of it, there’s plenty to see, including this very cool mural. I’ve had a look online and drawn a complete blank on this one. No photos, no discussion. Nothing.
Here’s what I do know: Phở is a Vietnamese rice noodle soup that’s very popular in Seattle. Pho Bac the restaurant has several locations, including this one on Rainier. And the Rainier Valley Post has this handy guide on how to order Phở at Pho Bac with detailed instructions, like “hold the fatty water” and “a little less rice noodles,” that will probably not endear you to the cook and wait staff. I also know that the mural has appeared sometime since August 2010, the date of the following “before” photo.
Like the new and in-progress murals on Aurora in North Seattle that I wrote about here, here, and here, this mural offers a nod to its location, featuring not only Rainier Ave, but also Mt. Rainier, looking suspiciously like it might just have erupted, not to mention the authentic seeming graffiti on the buildings and sidewalk.
