I wrote about the popular blog Stuff White People Like here highlighting the “prototypical white denizens” in Seattle. I suspect Seattle in general is Stuff White People Like and soccer too. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that Seattle, consistently ranked as one of the country’s smartest cities, has a soccer fan base that easily ranks first in the MLS, with almost twice as many fans as the LA Galaxy, who came in a distant second in 2010.
And soccer is there on the list of Stuff White People Like, coming in at #80. But apparently it’s not soccer these White People like, rather it’s the idea of soccer. According to Stuff #80:
Many white people will tell you that they are very into soccer. But be careful, it’s a trap. … In fact, the main reason white people like soccer is so they can buy a new scarf.
I’d like to think that smug “Stuff” guy has it wrong this time, but then there’s these photos. And the fact that at times at Quest Field the game seems almost incidental. Can you say: calisthenics? And then there’s my own friends, who are generally more excited about the scarves that come with the season tickets, than the tickets themselves. Never mind who gets what game, who gets the new scarf?
And I guess I feel okay about this because I (smug, like the bloke who writes Stuff White People Like) fall under the following exemption at the bottom of the Stuff #80 post. And, I only wear my scarf when it’s cold. Honest.
Note: Europeans are actually into Soccer and are exempt from this entry, however they are free to use it to their advantage when in North America.
