This mural is located in Seattle’s Belltown neighborhood at 1st and Lenora, on the wall of Vain, a hair salon among other things, but better known to crusty Goths and other old folks as the original location of the Vogue. I’d assumed this was a mural in a graffiti style, but turns out that it is fact just graffiti on what is apparently Belltown’s only sanctioned graffiti wall; a smaller, less derelict version of Tubs in the U-District if you will.
I wrote here about the Belltown Cottages: the epitome of an oxymoron; and here about being modern and plastic in Belltown, both characteristics I tend to associate with the neighborhood. The words vain and Belltown are not quite synonymous, but not that far apart either. Search online for “vain mural belltown” and you’ll see some of the earlier graffiti in this space and here’s a link to Vain’s blog and a couple of pictures of graffiti-in-progress.
