We recently visited friends in Vancouver. They warned us they were having some work done on their house and suggested we might want to enter via the back entrance. Yeah. No doubt. The front of the house was supported by 2x4s. But unlike this house in Ballard, which is being raised, instead of razed, our friends are actually burrowing down. Well, they’re not, their contractor is. The house will remain at the same elevation, but the five foot basement will eventually have 8 foot ceilings and be converted into a separate rental apartment and a guest suite (yes!).
It’s a great location in Kitsilano, just a few blocks from 4th Avenue and the beach, and a couple of miles from UBC. “Crack Shack or Mansion?” I hear you ask? I think we all know the answer to that one. That’s why they–and most of their neighbors–need the basement rental unit. That’s the Joneses part of the post. Here are some of the neighboring houses.
